John E. Jenkins Inc. recently donated time and equipment to move a 12,000-pound spirit rock onto the campus of Southwest Middle School. Jenkins worked in partnership with Communities in Schools and The Alliance for Children and Youth. “Our students are so excited. This partnership with the local community has given us something that will be here for students to enjoy for many more years,” said Dwayne Burks, CIS coordinator for Southwest Middle. Other local business partners included PSNC/SCANA employees who painted and landscaped in preparation for the spirit rock’s arrival as part of the United Way’s annual Make A Difference Day Oct. 17.

The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club on Marietta Street was demolished Wednesday after about a year of remaining vacant.

The club was closed last June after a financial crunch.

The local advisory board recommended the cutbacks after hearing from a study committee that looked at the Salvation Army’s overall budget.

The Marietta Street building was more than 40 years old and repair costs had been mounting for years.
